The World Eye Injury Registry (WEIR) has been established by the International Society of Ocular Trauma (ISOT) to serve as a research resource for its members and other reporting ophthalmologists. Membership in ISOT is not required in order to report to WEIR. Each reporting ophthalmologist or their designated ophthalmic technician (DOT) is automatically able to access and analyze his own reports using the powerful WEIR analysis software. Because terminology and report formats are standardized, accurate comparison can then be made with other physician's reports. Physician and patient identities are not kept in the WEIR database except by code assignment. Therefore, anonymity is preserved. Requests for access to the research database above and beyond the individual reporters contribution can be requested of the WEIR Research Committee.

The World Eye Injury Registry is an international federation of country registries existing in cyberspace. Within each country, sub categories of states or provinces are also possible. Within each state or province, subcategories of physician groups and individual members of these groups are possible. All ophthalmologists are urged to collaborate in reporting serious eye trauma to WEIR, defined as eye injury resulting in permanent and significant structural or functional change to the eye.
